A great case of resilience: Steve Jobs

Watch Steve Jobs giving an inspirational speech at a graduation ceremony of college students at Standford University in 2005. As agreed in class, choose one of the following topics he addressed and explain the main statement and the supporting ideas he used to develop it: connecting dots, loss and love, and death.

  1. The main statement of the topic "connecting dots" is that everything in life has a purpose but you can only see it looking backwards and no forward. By believing that, one might be able to trust that all we do following our heart, our guts, or desires will have sense anytime later, and THAT, will make the difference.
In order to explain what that meant he told the audience how he dropping out college was a consequence of his biological mother giving him in adoption because he deserved college graduated parents and the fact that going to an expensive college at at the expenses of his working parents savings without seeing the point in it, made him realize that that wasn't what he wanted to do; instead of going to his regular courses he went to the ones that really caught his attention, but just ten years later he realized how that decision and those apparently worthless courses made his first Mac computer a complete success.

  2. The irony is that he was invited to give a speech in a graduation ceremony of college students and his message if read between the lines criticizes professional degrees and invites students to pursuit a career based on their hearts and convictions.

  3. His third story about “death” is a wonderful example of how you can overcome the difficulties and the hardest things that can happened you in life and take advantage of them. Also his massage give us powerful reasons to start living every day as it was the last, because anyway we do not know when we are going to die, so we should do what we really want to do with our lives. In addition he gives a prominent inspiration to people to follow their dreams, their goals, and their wishes in life, without care what the others think or believe about them, because the only thing you must care and you must follow in order to be successful in life is what your heart advise you, because it is the only one that really knows who you want to become. I finish saying that this speech of Steve Jobs is simply touching and motivating.

    2. The second story is about love and loss, he tells the audience the losses that he had, and it was hard, he felt devastated. He lost his own company when he was fired at age of thirty. Even though in life there are big losses, we do not have to lose the faith in things that we really love, as he explains when he was fired from his own company, he still loved what he did, and he decided to start again and that was the most creative time of his life.
We have to love the things that we do, because that is the only way to be satisfied in our work, in our life, and if we have not found what we love, we need to continue searching those things that we love, that is the advice that Steve jobs gives to every one of the audience.
This is a good example of how life can be. We always lose something, but the most important is to love all the things that we do and keep going.

  5. The third story, told by Jobs, about death invites the audience to not be afraid of dying but living each day as if it were the last. Jobs exhort us to ask ourselves whether we like or not what we are doing we our life if the answer turns out to be negative, we must work to change that answer throughout the day and the following days until we are satisfied.
What would we do if this were our last day on Earth? This thought would help us to give our best in order to reach what we aim. What Jobs meant to say is that we do not have anything to lose but all to gain so let give it a try, let enjoy our limited time on Earth and do not waste it doing something we do not like.

  7. After a great story which makes me think why I study... Stive tell a story about love and loss, about persistence, and about how things are always plotting in our life. He was fired from his own company, his board of directors sided with his partner, he lost everything and although Apple was a company now valued at two billion dollars, having lost it, it was the best thing that could have happened in his life.

Despite his failure, he got up, he had been rejected, but he was still in love with what he did; and his success was even greater. Over the next five years created a company named NeXT, another company named Pixar (which is the study of animation most successful in the world), and then he met his wife.

But then, Apple ended up buying Next, Stive in returned to Apple, and technologies developed in Next became the heart of the company.
Having passed through hard times, lose his company and all that he had not turned Stive in a person of little faith. Conversely, Stive in Jobs is an indisputable proof that if you love what you do you'll never lose, you'll never be defeated. That's why you must never lose faith.
